How are values worked out?

ThriftHound identifies the piece (and reads its mark if you add a close-up), then estimates the range similar pieces typically sell for, sold prices rather than asking prices, adjusted for the condition it can see. The reasons are listed under the price. It's an estimate, not an appraisal: tap "Sold listings on eBay" to see what people actually paid.

Why should I add a close-up of the mark?

The mark, backstamp, label or base is often what tells a $5 piece from a $50 one. In our tests the maker came back right about twice as often with a close-up.

I scanned the same piece twice and the value changed

The same photo always gets the same answer. A new photo of the same piece usually gets the same range, because ThriftHound remembers recent values for each kind of piece; if the new photo shows something different (a chip, a different size), the range can change. If a value looks wrong, email us the piece and both results.

It identified my piece wrongly

Try a sharper photo in daylight with the whole piece in frame, then add a close-up of any mark. Check "Could also be" and the "Check before you buy" test. Reproductions and reissues are common; when in doubt, check in hand.
